What is the Book Bloggers Holiday Swap?
It’s an annual Secret Santa gift exchange between book bloggers, now
in its fifth year! You can read a little more about its history if you
click over to the
About page.

How does it work?
First, you sign up by filling in the Google Form on our introduction post.
You have until the
12th of November to do so. You’ll then be
randomly assigned another blogger, whose Secret Santa you’ll be.

What happens if I forget to sign up by the deadline?
Unfortunately we can’t accept more participants after everyone has
been assigned a Santa, so we’ll be taking down the form after the
12th. So why don’t you sign up
now to make sure that doesn’t
happen? 😀

Okay, I’ll sign up now! What happens next?
By the
19th of November at most, you’ll receive an e-mail with
the details of the blogger you’ve been assigned. What you have to do
next is send that person a small gift.

A small gift? How small?
Your gift should be a book, a journal or bookmark, a box of Christmas
cookies, a mixed CD, a crafty homemade gift, etc. You can participate in the swap at two levels, $25 or $40 USD or equivalent $  is the minimum value expected for each package. To make everyone more comfortable, we’ll be letting you know if your “santee” would mind gently used books.  Book bloggers who are also authors may send their work SOLELY in addition to other gifts they have selected for their recipient.

Yes, but how much am I expected to spend?
Each package should be valued at the swap amount you signed up for ($25 or $40 USD or equivalent). Make sure your gift is thoughtful, and your person will appreciate it for sure.

How will I know what to get my “santee”?
We’re asking everyone what kind of gifts they usually like exactly so
we can make the Santas lives easier! When we give you your “santee”‘s
mailing address, we’ll also give you that information.

Will my Secret Santa be the same person I’m Secret Santa to?
Nope; otherwise it wouldn’t be much of a secret :P. This is also the
reason why we don’t need an even number of participants.

Okay, but how secret is secret? Am I suppose to hide my identity
forever?

Secret=VERY secret until your person receives their gift. At the end of the swap, all secret santa partners will be revealed, but until that time shhh!

Anyone can sign up for this, right?
Active book bloggers, posting a minimum of 5 times in the last month,
and those who have completed prior swap commitments are welcome to participate.

So this means it’s open worldwide. But what if I can’t afford to
mail a package internationally?

The swap
is open worldwide, but we’re asking everyone to let us
know whether or not they can mail internationally when they sign up.
If you can’t, we’ll make sure you’re assigned someone from your own
country or continent, whichever you prefer.

When should I mail my gift?
If your blogger is in a different country than you, we’d ask you to
have it on its way by the
2nd of December. We’re hoping we’ll all be able
to get things done before the holiday season starts to get REALLY
crazy busy.

What happens if my gift is lost in the mail?
All participants will be required to use tracking  and to enter the tracking number into a master spreadsheet as they send their packages. International tracking is always pricey. With a large number of participants there’ll always be a few cases of missing packages.
We ask those of you sending to Canada not to include
anything edible, as in previous years chocolate has been known to
cause packages to be held by customs. Also, if you know of any other
noteworthy customs regulations that your own country has, let us know
and we’ll give your Santa that info.

What do I do once my gift arrives?
First of all, you acknowledge it and thank your Santa, of course :D.
You don’t want to leave them wondering if the gift arrived or not.
Then you might decide to write a post about your gift so you can share
your excitement with others. At the end of November, we’ll put up a Mr
Linky so that everyone can share their posts.

You might also want to tweet about your gift – in that case, we
encourage you to use the official hashtag
#holidayswap so we
can keep track of all the tweets!

Anything else?
Not that we can think of. But if you have any further questions,
comments or suggestions, don’t hesitate to contact us at bbholidayswap
[at] gmail [dot] com.

Thank you and Happy Holidays!
